Chicago is the third largest city in the United States. Many people think of Chicago as a separate part of Illinois, as it is so different from the rest of the state, but it's among the top field trip destinations for schools across the state. In north-central Illinois, about 90 miles from Chicago, are Starved Rock and Matthiessen state parks. They are among the few in the state that provide hiking trails that lead to canyons and cliffs. Starved Rock is a popular destination for schools and families, as it has well-mapped trails to waterfalls and other natural formations. Matthiessen is a destination for those who wish to leave the tourists behind and go out on their own. It is well-marked, but not in the same way as Starved Rock, leaving much up to the interpretation of the family who chooses to explore it.
The city of Chicago isn't the only interesting part of the northeastern section of Illinois. The Chicago suburbs also offer exciting family activities. In Gurnee, you can take your kids for a day of fun at Six Flags Great America. In Schaumburg, take your family shopping at Woodfield Mall, the Streets of Woodfield and Ikea. Springfield is the capital of Illinois, and it is also known for being the home of President Abraham Lincoln. Lincoln may not have been born in Illinois, but he spent his formative and adult years here, and he is also buried in Springfield. Springfield not only offers family activities such as tours of the Capitol building and the historic downtown, but it also has the Abraham Lincoln Museum, which helps bring to life the importance behind this Civil War president.
