Alton Towers is located in the English region of Staffordshire, north of the village of Alton. The park is approximately 16 miles from the city of Stoke-on-Trent.
A former royal estate, which was first open to the public in 1860, Alton Towers opened as a theme park in 1980.
In a 2008 report by the Themed Entertainment Association, Alton Towers was listed as the 10th most visited European theme park, with an attendance of 2,520,000 for that year.
Alton Towers is split into themed areas such as the "Mutiny Bay" pirate themed section. The park also features several roller coasters such as the "Nemesis" and "Rita-Queen of Speed," which accelerates up to 60 mph in 2.5 seconds.
Alton Towers is closed during the winter months. In 2009 it was open from March 28 until November 1.
