Alton Towers, located on a historical site, is one of Europe's most popular theme parks. It features many different attractions and rides.

    • Alton Towers is located in the English region of Staffordshire, north of the village of Alton. The park is approximately 16 miles from the city of Stoke-on-Trent.

    History

    • A former royal estate, which was first open to the public in 1860, Alton Towers opened as a theme park in 1980.

    Significance

    • In a 2008 report by the Themed Entertainment Association, Alton Towers was listed as the 10th most visited European theme park, with an attendance of 2,520,000 for that year.

    Features

    • Alton Towers is split into themed areas such as the "Mutiny Bay" pirate themed section. The park also features several roller coasters such as the "Nemesis" and "Rita-Queen of Speed," which accelerates up to 60 mph in 2.5 seconds.

    Seasons

    • Alton Towers is closed during the winter months. In 2009 it was open from March 28 until November 1.
