How to Avoid the Traffic to Disney Theme Parks

Disney World is packed with people every single day of the year. The traffic inside the parks is almost matched by the traffic getting to the park. There are a few ways to get to the park quicker and beat the vehicular traffic and maybe even get a heads-up on the interior foot traffic for at least an hour or two.

Take the still little-known shortcut to the back entrance of Disney World. Take 192 east until you come to Sherberth Rd. Turn left on Sherberth and keep going until you reach the first set of traffic lights. Turning left will take you right into the Animal Kingdom Lodge. When the sign for Animal Kingdom Lodge shows up, you will be required to make rousing little U-turn. From the lodge, hop onto a bus to take you to any park you want to go to.

Stay inside the park at one of Disney's hotels or resorts. The single best way to avoid dealing with traffic to a Disney World theme park is to stay there and ride the buses. At every single resort there are buses that leave 10 minutes or so to each of the individual parks. So if you are planning to spend the day at the Magic Kingdom, you don't have to watch as people are dropped off at Epcot, Typhoon Lagoon and Downtown Disney first. The reverse is also true as buses will arrive at the parks that take tourists back only to specific hotels and resorts.

Avoiding Orlando's rush hour traffic jam is the best way to cut down on traffic headaches to Disney World if you are situated a good distance from the parks. The heaviest weekday traffic occurs 7:30 AM to about 9:00 AM. One way to avoid traffic would be to leave very early and beat the rush traffic. The only problem is that you'll have to wait until 9:00 for the parks to open. Heading for the park after 8:30 will alleviate most of your traffic problems on the interstate, but you'll be heading directly into heavy traffic inside the park. You can leave the hotel after 9:00 but you'll probably miss an hour or two of park time, so it's a really a choice of what means more to you.

Visit Disney World during off-peak periods. It's a simple equation: the more people going to the park, the more traffic there is going to be. By visiting at certain times you can cut down somewhat on the traffic. The absolute busiest times of the year at Disney World are during Christmas, Easter, the 4th of July, and during the spring break period from early March to mid-April. Traffic will be at its worst during this period. The best time to avoid traffic at Disney World is during January, September and December before Christmas break begins for school.
