A popular off-road trail is a four day route from Somerset West to Montagu, following the L'Ahulhas coast and exploring the nearby mountain scenery. Starting in Somerset West, bikers can follow back roads through the Overberg farming region to the L'Agulhas coast. At the southernmost tip of Africa this is a stretch of coast famous for whale watching. Following gravel tracks to Mossel Bay, bikers will cross the Gondwana Game Reserve, a good place to spot Zebras, Elephants and Lions. Heading to the mountains, riders can ride rough tracks passing over the Langeberg Mountains and follow the historic Gysmanshoek Pass Ox Wagon Trail to the town of Heidelberg. From here riders can spend a day winding around gravel roads in the wine growing region of Robertson to end up in Montagu. The wild, East coast of South Africa, with its rich Zulu heritage and nature reserves provides exciting riding for off-road enthusiasts. Bikers can follow a route along the coastal hills and reserves around the city of Durban. Starting in Durban, riders can follow winding passes over seaside hills to Port St Johns. Heading inland to the foothills of the Maluti Kingdom of Lesotho, bikers can prepare themselves for the Roof of Africa Trail. In this high altitude habitat, home to goat and cattle farms, riders follow the Sani Pass, a rocky track which reaches a summit of 10,000 feet. From here, bikers ride through the Umgeni Valley, back to Durban, passing through the hills and varied countryside of the Zulu nation. Starting in Johannesburg, riders can follow many off-road trails through the ancient battlegrounds of Shaka and passing through big game reserves, featuring giraffes and elephants. Riders can plan a circular route starting in the Mpumalanga Province, that travels over the mountain passes of the Middleveld, over Dirkiesdorp, via Paulpietersburg to to the Ithala Game Reserve. Reaching the Pongola River, the next base to head to is the Pongola Game Reserve, where hippos bathe in the river. Snaking along the rough tracks next to the Pongola river, in authentic Zululand, riders can head for Lake Sibaya, the largest freshwater lake in South Africa. Edging away from the Mozambique border riders can make their way back to Johannesburg, through the forest and mountain roads of the Baberton region.
