The Crystal Garden at Navy Pier is home for the yearly Chinese New Year Extravaganza. The Chinese Fine Arts Society celebrates with traditional Chinese music, martial arts demonstrations, folk dance, Chinese Lion Dancers and performances for all ages. Chinese arts and crafts and calligraphy by the Chinese Fine Arts Society Calligraphers can be purchased at the extravaganza. Traditional Chinese instruments, such as the bamboo flute will be performed. The extravaganza is from noon to 5.30 p.m., making it an inviting and colorful February afternoon at Navy Pier. Outdoor ice skating in Millennium Park at the McCormick Tribune Ice Rink is a romantic and exciting activity for February. Skate rental is only $10, as of 2010. The first inaugural concert was emceed by Studs Terkel 50 years ago. Since then, the University of Chicago has held a yearly Folk Festival celebrating traditional music from not only the United States, but all around the world. Three full days of music and dance is often held the second weekend in February. The festival lineup will be announced at a later time at uofcfolk.org. Concerts, workshops and musicians will be announced. All concerts will be held in Mandel Hall.
