Things to See & Do in Ely, Nevada

Respected travel publisher Lonely Planet says Ely, in eastern Nevada, is on "the loneliest road in America" -- also known as Highway 50. But its remote location does not mean that the former mining town, which sprang up in the 1860s, has little to offer its guests. There are plenty of things to do and see in the city of Ely.
  1. Nevada Northern Railway

    • The historic Nevada Northern Railway is a fully functioning train museum. With its fleet of trains from different eras, the museum runs locomotive services throughout the year allowing visitors to Ely a chance to see the town from a unique perspective. The railway hosts a number of special events, such as "ghost trains," Santa's Polar Express steam trains, barbecue trains and wine trains. The Nevada Northern Railway has won multiple "Best of Nevada" awards from Nevada Magazine.

    Hotel Nevada and Gambling Hall

    • Hotel Nevada and Gambling Hall has quite a past, which should make it a place of interest for history buffs staying in Ely. Despite the fact that the six-story hotel opened in the height of Prohibition in 1929, the management saw no reason their clientele shouldn't enjoy illicit alcohol and gambling 24 hours a day. Today, the hotel's casino is still a popular spot for tourists. The Gambling Hall offers live hold'em poker games, blackjack tables and more than 200 slot machines.

    White Pine Public Museum

    • The White Pine Public Museum was created by the Ely Business and Professional Women's Club in 1959. Today, the museum celebrates Ely's history, which began with the Shoshone Indians long before mining brought explorers and prospectors to the town in search of gold, silver and lead in the 1860s. Museum visitors can expect to see numerous exhibits from the mining boom, as well as Shoshone artifacts such as ancient baskets. The museum also boasts a large collection of historic dolls.
