While Reno, Nevada might be known more as an adult playground with gambling and nightlife entertainment, activities for families do exist. Considered the lowbrow cousin of Las Vegas, "A new Reno is in the making that goes beyond old casinos," says Lonely Planet. From wildlife sanctuaries to a children's museum, Reno offers a gamut of activities for the entire family to enjoy including educational excursions, adventure parks and zoos filled with exotic animals.
  1. The Children's Museum of Northern Nevada

    • The Children's Museum of Northern Nevada provides families with an educational experience while entertaining them. Located approximately 30 miles away in Carson City, Nevada, the museum is a 40-minute trip by car from Reno. The non-profit museum exhibits and focuses on the arts, sciences and humanities. The museum programs are based on Nevada's educational standards with emphasis on historical culture and kinetic movement. The museum is open daily from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. with special hours on holidays. As of Summer 2010, admission for children ages 13 and under is $2 and adults (including children 14 years and older) pay $5 for admission.

    Wild Island Family Adventure Park

    • For family seeking a mix of indoor and outdoor entertainment options, Wild Island Family Adventure Park offers not only a water park, but also includes a bowling center, mini-golf and Go-Karts. While families can not enter the park with foods and drinks, a snack bar located in the entry building offers hot dogs, snacks and Coca-Cola beverages for purchase. The Wild Island Family Adventure Park is open year-round but hours of operations vary seasonally and for each activity area. A variety of pricing options and packages are available.

    Sierra Safari Zoo

    • Considered the largest zoo in Nevada with over 200 animals, Sierra Safari Zoo offers entertainment for the young and the old. The zoo currently houses over 40 different species of animal including sloths, lemurs, zebras and monkeys. The zoo also hosts eight kinds of wild cats including tigers and lions. "My dream was to bring the animals I loved together with the children of the area to promote empathy for animals everywhere," says Dale McDaniel co-founder of the zoo. The zoo is open seven days a week from 10 a.m to 5 p.m. Every first Monday of the month, families get free admission to the zoo. As of Summer 2010, general admission any other time is $7 for adults and $6 for children 12 and under.
