Things to Do at Mission Beach

Mission Beach is one of the most popular destinations in San Diego, California, for both locals and tourists. Whether visitors want to relax under the sun or indulge in entertainment and water sports, Mission Beach provides the ideal setting for a genuine Southern California experience. Although it's known for its sun-filled, Mediterranean climate, this corner of California is best avoided during what the locals refer to as "May Gray" and "June Gloom."
  1. Catch a Wave

    • Southern California is the nation's primary mainland surfing destination, and Mission Beach is a magnet for surfers from all over the world. Whether you've never surfed before or you're a professional, Mission Bay Aquatic Center offers surfing lessons to all skill levels, as well as single sessions and full courses on the sport. Wakeboarding, waterskiing, kayaking, rowing, windsurfing and sailing are also popular water sports, and Mission Beach is populated with shops that offer all the necessary sporting equipment for rent or sale.

    Ride a Roller-Coaster

    • The massive Giant Dipper roller-coaster is the first eye-catcher from any point on Mission Beach. Part of the oceanfront amusement center, Belmont Park, this main attraction offers visitors a speedy, exciting ride in the ocean air, and operates year-round. Belmont Park has plenty of other rides, such as the Tilt-a-Whirl, The Beach Blaster and Chaos, as well as rides for smaller children, such as the bumper cars and a carousel. Water rides, games and additional entertainment also contribute to Belmont Park's role as a source of family fun at Mission Beach.

    Party Under the Sun

    • The Wave House is a giant outdoor entertainment facility, just adjacent to Belmont Park. Surfers practice catching waves in "The Flow Rider" wave pool, while a youthful and energetic 20-something crowd often fills the outdoor patio where musical performers entertain on stage. The Wave House is also an athletic facility, with a complete fitness center and pool. Visitors may also dine The White Sand Village Oasis restaurant and North Shore Cafe. For a list of scheduled performances at The Wave House, pick up "The San Diego Reader," a free weekly publication on local news and events.

    Relax in the Sun

    • Southern Californians understand well that although every day can be "a day at the beach," they don't have to be days of constant activity. Visitors often enjoy Mission Beach simply by sunbathing on the sandy shore or wading in the water. The strand, often populated with joggers, bicyclists and roller-bladers, also provides a scenic and relaxing tour along Mission Beach. Shops, cafes and bars are abundant, parallel to the strand.
