Sprinkles Cupcakes founder Candace Nelson started the famous bakery with her husband. It was her hope that her sweet miniature cakes would continue the legacy of her grandmother, a well-known pastry chef in San Francisco. The Nelsons opened their bakery on April 13, 2005 in a small storefront on Little Santa Monica Boulevard.
One of the most popular aspects of Sprinkles are its flavors and signature center candy dot. The bakery features more than 20 cupcake flavors that vary daily, so if customers become addicted to a certain flavor, they have to check the online calendar to make sure their favorite flavors will be available the day they visit the store. Some of the most popular flavors are red velvet, sweat cream butter, Belgian chocolate, Madagascar bourbon vanilla and strawberry.
Since Sprinkles Cupcakes are such a popular comfort food in L.A., many people use them as gifts for friends and family for various occasions. The bakery even features special cupcakes on holidays such as Father's Day and St. Patrick's Day and graduation-themed cupcakes for graduation season (mid- to late-May). Cupcakes can be ordered ahead of time for pick-up, which is especially helpful for those who have large orders to place. Sprinkles bakes small batches of fresh cupcakes throughout the day, so ordering ahead makes pick-up less time consuming. Sprinkles will also deliver locally.
For Sprinkles Cupcake addicts who live in cities outside of Los Angeles, the mini cupcake factory has branched off to include stores in Dallas, Houston, Newport Beach, Calif., Phoenix and Palo Alto, Calif. Sprinkles has many other cupcake store locations in the works for cities such as Atlanta, Washington D.C., Miami, Charlotte, Chicago and Las Vegas.
Sprinkles also features cupcake towers for their customers who want to entertain guests at parties and give them their own personal cakes. The towers carry 24 to 36 cupcakes each. Brides-to-be who are obsessed with the product can order cupcakes for their wedding in lieu of a cake, and have them placed on a tower or on individual plates.
