Play a round at the Brackenridge Golf Course. This 18-hole course was opened in 1916 and underwent a major renovation in 2008. You have to reserve your tee time seven days in advance by calling (210) 226-5612.
Visit the site of the San Antonio Japanese Tea Gardens. Located in an old quarry, the place was renamed the Chinese Tea Gardens during World War II and then the Sunken Gardens. Restored in 2007, the gardens are overlooked by a pagoda-style viewing pavilion. There are several levels of pathways, bridges over koi ponds and a waterfall along the back wall.
Continue down the street to the Sunken Garden Theatre. This amphitheatre is a popular site for the performing arts, especially bands.
Don't miss the San Antonio Zoo. This 56-acre facility with over 3,500 animals is consistently ranked as one of the finest zoos in the nation. Like the Tea Gardens, it uses its setting in a quarry to maximum advantage.
Exit the zoo and head southeast over to the station of the Brackenridge Eagle. This miniature train circles the park and has been a San Antonio family tradition since the 1950s.
Turn east in front of the zoo down Tuleta Drive, cross the San Antonio River and Red Oak and look off to the right for the wilderness walking trail, which heads south toward East Mulberry. There's a bird watching path here as well.
Visit the Witte Museum. It features exhibits on nature, anthropology, paleontology and history. In the courtyard are four nineteenth-century houses, as well as the Science Treehouse, in which children can learn all about science in a fun and hands-on manner.
