Prepare all the documents you will need to process a passport application. This includes: evidence of U.S. citizenship and proof of identity. Valid evidence of U.S. citizenship are a previous passport, certified birth certificate, naturalization certificate and certificate of citizenship consular report of birth abroad. For proof of identity, you will need either a valid driver's license, military ID or a state ID.
Obtain two passport photographs. Acceptable passport photos are 2-by 2-inches in size and must be taken within the last six months. Photos should be in color and of your full face. Visit local photo printing services such as Kinko's and UPS stores. These stores offer passport photo services that follow requirements for U.S. passports.
Go to the Bureau of Consular Affairs, U.S. Department of State website and download the form DS-11 application for a U.S. passport. Fill out the entire form online or by hand but do not sign the application until you are instructed in person by the acceptance agent. Print the application.
Bring all documents and visit an acceptance facility or passport agency in San Antonio. You can choose from many facilities including: the Municipal Archives and Records Facility in South Santa Rosa, Alamo Heights Station in Broadway, Heritage Post Office in Richland Hills or University Park Station on Bandera Road.
Submit your completed form DS-11and wait for the agent's instructions for you to sign. Present all the other necessary documents and pay the applicable fees. Bring your checkbook as some facilities, like the San Antonio Office of the City Clerk only accept checks or money orders for payments.
Anticipate about six weeks for your passport application to be processed. According to the Bureau of Consular Affairs, passports are returned using first class mail. If you are in a hurry, inquire about any expedited services that may be available.
