How Many People Speak Icelandic?

Icelandic has approximately 370,000 native speakers, almost all in Iceland. Smaller communities exist in Denmark, Norway, Sweden, the U.S., and Canada (mostly immigrants and descendants), bringing the global total slightly higher. The language has changed remarkably little since medieval times, allowing modern Icelanders to read sagas with ease.
