Pahoa is on the "Big Island" of Hawaii, on the southeastern part of the island, about 30 miles south of Hilo, the island's city and an hour's flight from Honolulu. According to the Lonely Planet Guide on Hawaii, the Big Island is where tourists can experience the "real" Hawaii, with native Hawaiian towns and working class areas. Pahoa is near Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, and close to uncrowded beaches with great tide pools for snorkeling. Most of the hotels in Pahoa are small, locally owned establishments.
This bed and breakfast is located on 2 acres of gardens and is within a five-minute drive from downtown Pahoa and about 2 miles from the beach. This inn is located in a former railroad station and boarding house for sugarcane workers built in the early 1900s. According to the Inn's website, the inn is in the former village of Kapoho, which was mostly destroyed in the 1960 eruption of Kilauea. What is left of Kapoho is now part of the town of Pahoa. The Inn has three rooms which share two bathrooms and a suite which has its own private bathroom. Guests may use a large shared kitchen, fully equipped with appliances and utensils. The Inn also has an in-town location on Main Street for longer stays. The townhouse has three bedrooms and can be rented in its entirety or by room. As of October 2010, rates range between $59 and $99 per night, based on double occupancy.

The Island Paradise Inn is near the center of Pahoa village and features 20 cottages which are all self-contained suites. Each suite has free parking, a kitchen or kitchenette, private bathroom and access to the Pahoa Village pool. The back yard is open to all guests and has umbrella tables, hammocks, sun chairs and barbecue grills. Wireless Internet is available in some of the suites.
