How to Reduce Housekeeping Theft in Hotels

Travelers can reduce the chance of falling victim to housekeeping theft by making smart decisions and taking the necessary steps to protect valuables.

Instructions

Leave unnecessary items of value at home so you will have less to keep track of. For instance, you might like to wear your favorite gold jewelry when on a vacation, but is it necessary? You might need your cell phone, but chances are you don't really need to take that necklace.

If there is one, use the safe in the room. Fill it with anything that will fit that is of value to you and could be easily stolen. Laptop, camera, cell phone, jewelry, money or credit cards, travel documents and computer gadgets. If you do not need it with you and you are not in the room, be sure it is securely locked in the safe.

Put a lock on your suitcase. This isn't completely foolproof, but it is better than using no security at all. Choose a lock with a security code and keep your valuable items in the locked suitcase while you are out of the room.

Use a security cord for your laptop. If the safe is not large enough for your laptop and you need to leave it in the room, invest in a security cord that fits into the universal security slot on most laptops. Secure the cord to a piece of permanent furniture or a fixture in the hotel room.

Carry a small backpack with you while you are out sightseeing and away from the room. Keep your valuables in it. For larger items, check to see whether a security box is available at the front desk of your hotel.
