DIY Money Pouch

When traveling, especially abroad, it is always comforting to have your valuables, such as money, credit cards and passport, with you at all times. Pockets have been picked for centuries and purses or travel bags are easily lost or stolen. Having a money pouch inside your clothing is very reliable and convenient. Making your own money pouch allows you to customize this piece to your own size and fabric preference. Use these directions to sew a pouch with a string that goes over your head or one that loops through your belt.

Instructions

  1. Over-the-Neck Money Pouch

    • 1

Select a sturdy but lightweight material such as muslin or linen. Smooth fabric will rest easily against your skin and not be an irritant.

    • 2

Cut the fabric into two 6-inch-by-18-inch rectangles. Cut enough sturdy, smooth cord to loop over your head and end where the pouch should hang, about 24 inches.

    • 3

Pin the fabric with right sides together at the top of the 6-inch rectangle. Pin the sides of the rectangle from the top and down 10 inches, leaving 8 inches open. Place the ends of the cords 3 inches from the top corners on the right side of the fabric. Pin them in place. The cord ends will come through the side seams.

    • 4

      Sew the three sides securely.

    • 5

Turn the fabric inside out. The cord should be outside and the seams inside. Place half the Velcro strip on the top inside edge.

    • 6

Fold the inside fabric in half where the 10-inch seam ended. Turn the raw edge under. Fold the back layer of fabric the same way, turning its raw edge under. Sew across the raw edges and tuck the raw side edges under. Sew the four layers of material securely in place, creating two pockets.

    • 7

Fold the top flap down at the cord and place the second half of the Velcro on the outside pocket.

    Belt Loop Money Pouch

    • 8

      Cut two 6-inch-by-18-inch rectangles.

    • 9

Pin with right sides together across the top, and 10 inches from the top down the side. Sew the three sides at the pins. Turn right side out and press seams.

    • 10

Fold the sewn 6-inch seam 3 inches from the top. Sew across the edge, leaving the sides open for a belt to pass through.

    • 11

Fold the inside fabric up at the 10-inch seam. Turn under all raw edges. Turn the outside fabric the same way and pin together. Sew the four layers of fabric with a serger or zigzag stitch, creating two pockets.

Thread your belt through four of your pants loops. Thread the money pouch onto the belt and finish threading through the pants loops. Turn the money pouch over your belt and pants to hang down on the inside of your pants.
