Bring a mobile phone with a built-in camera. First and foremost, you want to provide yourself with the utmost safety. Since much of the yard sale goes through rural, small town areas, you want to arm yourself with telephone communication in case of an emergency. The camera function is great if you find something that someone else might like. Simply take a picture and send it to their phone so they can decide for themselves.
Prepare for rough terrain. Make sure your vehicle is in tip-top working order, and try to bring a truck. Even if you don't think you want to buy anything large, a truck always comes in handy in frequent muddy areas. Again, a lot of the yard sale goes through muddy fields. For this reason, you might also want to bring an extra pair of shoes.
Reserve a hotel room early. Not only do these small towns have little room for the World's Largest Yard Sale buyers, the vendors also look for vacancies. Never wait until the last minute, or arrive hoping to get a room on the spot.
Bring newspaper, tarps, plastic garbage bags, sandwich baggies and plastic grocery sacks. Wrap delicate purchases in newspaper. Cover your car seats with the tarp for dirty or wet items. Organize items with the garbage and grocery bags, and keep small items together in the little baggies.
