What Type of Clothing Do You Wear to Cameroon?

Cameroon is a West African country bordered by Nigeria, Chad, Central African Republic, Congo, Gabon and Equatorial Guinea. The local languages are French and English, although people speak many other local languages as well (Reference 1). According to the Lonely Planet, the 2009 population in Cameroon was 16.4 million. The weather is hot all year, with a wet season in the north from April to September and heavy rain in the south from June to October.
  1. Traditional Clothing

    • Most traditional clothing is made out of lightweight cotton fabric and is designed to be loose and flowing (Reference 2). In their homes, women often wear a "kabba," or one-piece garment, that allows for easy movement. A common outfit for males is known as "un boubou avec pantalon," which is a free-flowing outfit with big pockets (Reference 2). Afritude is a popular contemporary clothing brand in Cameroon, known for a slightly more modern style. Textiles used to make traditional clothing are usually embroidered. Also widespread in Cameroon is "basain," a cotton fabric in one color with a woven pattern on it (Reference 2).

    Tourists

    • Although traditional dress is worn by some natives in Cameroon, it is heavily influenced by western clothing styles and trends, which are frequently worn by people in the cities. Tourists are not expected to wear traditional clothing, but should still dress conservatively. Torn or dirty clothes are considered insulting if worn. Visitors to Cameroon should dress appropriately to gain respect (Reference 3). Appropriate clothing includes pants for men and long pants or knee-length or longer skirts for women. Skimpy tank tops or revealing tops should be avoided. Take into account the weather and time of year and pack accordingly.

As with the traditional clothing for Cameroon, visitors are advised to dress in lightweight cotton to keep cool and dry. If you plan on doing any hiking or outdoor activities, bring sturdy shoes and thick socks. Wear a hat and sunglasses during the day and keep a light sweater or jacket for evenings when it is cooler. If you are visiting during the wet season, bring a raincoat (Resource 1).
