Pack casual clothes for your safari trip because you will be in a dusty and rough-riding Range Rover or other safari vehicle for several hours a day. Cotton shirts, pants and shorts -- all in light colors -- work best. You will be hotter in dark colors, and animals can become startled by brightly colored clothing.
A sun hat and sunglasses also are good to have because the sun can be intense. There is no need to spend a lot of money on safari costumes. Casual shirts, pants and jeans that you already own are all you need.
Skip dressing up while dining on safari if you want. A nice shirt and pants or skirt with sandals are acceptable.
Leave your expensive jewelry at home. Tanzanians typically do not wear flashy jewelry.
Refrain from wear skimpy clothing in Zanzibar, Tanzania. The city is home to many devout Muslims who find this objectionable. Zanzibar residents understand that their island is a popular tourist destination, and they are very welcoming of tourists. You can repay their hospitality by keeping your clothing modest.
Wear knee-length skirts or shorts in town, but swimsuits are acceptable on the beaches. Sleeveless shirts are fine, but make sure the neckline isn't too revealing and that the shirt isn't skin-tight.
Cover up when visiting a mosque. Women's heads must be covered with a scarf to avoid offense. Not all mosques allow visitors, so don't go into one unless you know for certain that you are allowed inside.
If you're going up Mount Kilimanjaro, in northeastern Tanzania, wear hiking shoes or boots that you have already broken in. You also should have comfortable shorts or pants, a short-sleeve cotton shirt and a bandanna.
Bring a waterproof jacket because temperatures vary on Kilimanjaro, which is Africa's highest peak at 19,340 feet.
Take along a small backpack for your water bottle, trail mix, camera, bug spray and other essentials.
