What to Wear on a Canadian Cruise

When planning a Canadian cruise, it is important to remember that the temperature in Canada can vary from very warm to very cold. When deciding what to wear on a Canadian cruise, consider the destinations of your cruise and the month in which you are visiting. Before packing, review the average daily and nightly temperatures of the areas. Although your packing list will depend on your specific cruise, there are a few tips you should always follow when packing for a Canadian cruise.
  1. Casual Wear

    • Unlike on a Caribbean cruise, you will probably not be spending your entire day at the pool. Although you may have very warm days, the daily temperatures in Canada don't get quite as high as they would if you were cruising to a southern location. It is wise to pack a swimsuit, but most of your casual attire should consist of light clothes you can easily layer. For example, pack shorts for warmer days and long pants for cooler days and evenings. Bring camisoles or T-shirts that can be easily layered with a sweatshirt or cardigan if the temperatures drop. Pack a light jacket with a hood, as the nighttime temperature in Canada can get quite chilly. If your cruise line will be traveling near any glaciers, you will need a heavy sweatshirt or sweater. Many Canadian cruise lines also recommend that you bring a raincoat or parka in case of rain or heavy winds.

Comfortable footwear is a necessity, as you will do quite a bit of walking around the ship and on any cruise stops. A comfortable pair of sandals or gym shoes will be sufficient for daily use. If your cruise line will be stopping at various ports, you may want to pack a pair of hiking boots, depending on the activities you plan to engage in. If your Canadian cruise is scheduled for cooler months, you may also need to pack a pair of boots or rubber galoshes.

    Formal Wear

    • Review your specific cruise line's dress code policy for dining. Many times, a Canadian cruise will ask guests not to wear informal clothing into the dining areas, such as shorts, T-shirts, jeans and swimwear. To be safe, pack casual dress clothes for dining. Men might bring a dress shirt and slacks; women should bring dresses, skirts, sweaters, slacks and blouses. Your cruise line may also require elegant dress on one special evening. For these evenings, men should wear a formal suit and tie or a tuxedo. Women should wear a cocktail dress, evening gown or formal pantsuit.
