What Do I Wear for a Warm Weather Cruise?

Cruise ships take travelers to locations all around the world, including tropical locations in the Caribbean, cruises around the Mediterranean, and even trips up rivers and fjords in Alaska. While it's important to pack smartly for any vacation, cruises to warm locations require special care in planning the clothes you'll bring with you. Your cruise wear will range from outdoor beachwear to fancy dinner suits and dresses to casual wear, depending on your itinerary.
  1. Beach Clothes

    • Beachwear, such as bikinis and bathing suits, are essential for cruises to warm weather destinations. Whether you are lounging on a beach chair on the ship's deck, or out on a Caribbean beach, beachwear helps you take advantage of the warm weather while working on a tan. This clothing style is great for these outdoor locales, but be sure to cover up while inside the ship dining rooms and casinos.

    Casual Wear

    • Most days and nights in the dining area of the cruise are nonformal meals. This means that your clothing choices will fall higher than casual beachwear and lower than formal wear. For these meals, men should wear collared polo or long-sleeved shirts and khaki pants or slacks. Women should wear dresses or pant suits. Dress casually but comfortably.

    Formal Wear

    • At least one night of the cruise will be a formal night. While tuxedos and formal dresses are not required, men should dress in dark suits and ties while women should wear gowns or cocktail dresses. Formal pictures are usually taken on these days, and these pictures are available for purchase after the dinner.

    Inside Clothing

    • Aside from beachwear, casual dinner clothing and formal wear, you will need to pack clothing for the casinos, shows and buffets inside the ship, as well as walking around the towns of the Caribbean. These clothes will include short-sleeved shirts and shorts and casual sundresses. Clothing that keeps you cool and comfortable is key for these situations.

    Cool Seaside Nights

    • Although you may be traveling to a warm tropical location, nighttime breezes from the ocean can sometimes turn the temperature a bit chilly. It is a good idea to pack a sweater or jacket for these nights, so you can enjoy an evening stroll on the deck of the cruise ship.
