Airlines Luggage Packing Rules

With increasing costs related to airline travel, it is wise to pack lightly and leave any items at home that may cause security problems. Items deemed illegal to bring on a flight will most likely be confiscated, causing a loss in personal property to you and adding to the cost of your trip. By knowing what to pack and what to leave home, you will increase your chances of speedy and cost efficient travel.
  1. Packing Rules

    • Contact your airline, or view their website, to identify their weight and item restrictions on luggage. If you are not checking any bags, make sure that the items you pack in your carry on luggage are not on the restricted list. There are some items that are able to be packed in checked luggage that are not permitted in carry on baggage and will not make it through the security check point.

    Firearms, Tools and Sports Equipment

    • Firearms and explosives are not permitted to be carried on a plane.

Firearms are generally permitted to be checked but never carried on an airplane by the public. Gun powder and explosive items are not permitted on the airplane ever. Sharp objects, with the exception of scissors with blades shorter than 4 inches, are not permitted for carry on or checked luggage. Tools such as wrenches and screwdrivers that are less than 7 inches may be carried on, while all other tools must be checked. Long sporting equipment, including baseball bats and ski poles, must all be checked baggage.

    The 3-1-1 Rule

    • All liquids must be under 3.4 ounces in carry on luggage.

The Transportation Security Administration uses the 3-1-1 rule when packing carry on liquids. Containers holding liquid must weigh under 3.4 ounces; all liquids must be contained in one quart sized plastic bag; and each passenger is allowed one plastic bag. There are exceptions for certain medications and baby formulas so make sure to check your airlines regulations. You will be asked to remove your quart sized plastic bag from your carry on luggage during the security screening so be prepared and have it available.
