Traveler's Checks vs. Travel Cards

Whether you are traveling abroad or within the United States, you should travel with at least three types of currency. Always carry a small amount of cash and a bank card, but many people also choose to take traveler's checks or cards as well.
  1. Companies

    • American Express is the leading company in traveler's checks and Visa TravelMoney is the leading travel card. There are other prepaid card options, but these are not accepted everywhere overseas.

    Banks

    • Traveler's checks and travel cards can be purchased at your bank or local currency exchange location. Some post offices also carry traveler's checks and cards.

    Assurance

    • Traveler's checks are accepted at most stores and banks. Using a traveler's check assures you money if the debit or ATM system is down and you do not have cash on you.

    Cards

    • Traveler cards are one of the safest types of currency to travel with because you need an ID and most times a pin number to use the card. They are accepted any place Visa is (unless you use a different provider).

    Amount

    • Cards can be loaded with any amount of money. However, checks must be purchased in $50 or $100 increments.
