How to Convert GBP to Naira

If you are travelling or sending money from Britain to Nigeria, it is essential that you exchange your currency from Great Britain pounds (GBP) to Nigerian naira (NGN). The pound sterling was used in Nigeria until 1973, when the naira was introduced and British currency became unacceptable. One Nigerian naira is made up of 100 kobo.

Instructions

    • 1

Set aside the amount you want to exchange. Determine how many pounds you will be exchanging for naira.

    • 2

Multiply the amount of pounds by the correct exchange rate for naira to determine the equivalent amount of naira. You can also use an online currency converter (see References). As of September 2010, the exchange rate was 1 GBP to approximately 244 NGN. Note that exchange rates change on a daily basis and you must therefore consult an exchange bureau for accurate rates.

    • 3

Visit a currency exchange office with your pounds sterling to exchange the currency to naira. In North America, the naira is not a common currency, so you should check with the exchange office first to ensure that they have naira on hand. Most exchange offices will charge a fee for exchange, so part of the money that you are exchanging will be used to pay the exchange fee. The amount you receive should be similar to the amount you determined in Step 2.
