HBL Pakistan & IBAN: Not Available as of 2022

Habib Bank Limited (HBL), Pakistan's largest bank, does not issue IBANs as of 2022.

Why?

• Pakistan has not adopted the IBAN standard (ISO 13616).
• Local account numbers (16–18 digits) + SWIFT/BIC used for international transfers.
• State Bank of Pakistan (central bank) has not mandated IBAN migration.

Current International Transfer Process

• Provide: HBL SWIFT (HABBPKKA), branch code, account title/number.
• Correspondent banks (e.g., JP Morgan, Standard Chartered) route USD/EUR/GBP.
• Incoming: sender uses HBL SWIFT + account details.

Future Possibility

Pakistan may adopt IBAN eventually (many countries did 2000s–2020s). HBL would announce via website, app, branches, social media.

Alternatives for Now

• SWIFT wire (3–5 days, fees $25–$50).
• Remittance services (Western Union, MoneyGram, Ria) – faster, higher fees.
• Fintech (Wise, Remitly) – often better rates, use local partners.
