Getting Cuban Currency (CUP) from the UK: Closed Currency Challenges

Obtaining Cuban Pesos (CUP) in the UK is extremely difficult because the CUP is a closed currency — not freely convertible outside Cuba.

The Reality

• No UK bank or bureau de change stocks CUP — it's not traded on international forex markets
• Cannot pre-purchase — you must acquire it inside Cuba
• Bring: EUR, GBP, USD (cash, crisp uncreased bills), or CAD — exchange at CADECA (official exchange houses), banks, or hotels in Cuba
• ATMs: Work with non-US Visa/Mastercard (check bank fees); dispense CUP
• Credit cards: Non-US cards accepted at hotels, larger restaurants, car rentals

Currency System (Post-2021 Unification)

• CUP (Moneda Nacional): Only legal tender since Jan 2021 (CUC eliminated)
• Official rate: ~120 CUP/USD (2024) — but...
• Informal rate: 250-350+ CUP/USD (street/CADECA parallel) — where reality lives
• MLC (Moneda Libremente Convertible): Digital dollar account for state stores — not for tourists

Practical Strategy for UK Travelers
