Find out if your phone is a GSM-enabled cell phone. Ask your network service provider if your phone is a quad-band GSM device. If your phone is not GSM-enabled, you can purchased an inexpensive unlock GSM phone, also known as "no contract phones" online using a reputable electronics retailer.
Obtain your phone's unique IMEI number by entering *#06# and pressing the "Call" button. Write down the 15 to 17-digit number for your reference.
Contact your network's customer service department and request an unlock code. If you have had your phone or contract for more than three months, requesting an unlock code will be no problem. Within three months, you will need to provide them with a good reason and convince them you are a loyal customer. Tell them you are traveling overseas and want to purchase a temporary international SIM card. Provide the customer service agent with your email address and account and IMEI number. Wait two to three days for an unlock code via email.
Follow the instructions in the email to unlock your device. It generally involves removing the SIM card and replacing it with a foreign SIM card. You will have to enter the unlock code when prompted and it will respond with a message saying your phone is now unlocked. Because each phone is different, consult the instructions in the email for specific details.
Purchase an international SIM card when you arrive at your oversea destination. Since your phone is unlocked and ready to use, you can simply purchase a temporary SIM card and stick it into the SIM tray of your cell phone.
