How to Obtain Euros While Traveling

When traveling it is safest to have a variety of payment options in case you have trouble with your credit card or experience theft. You should always carry a moderate amount of cash. In most of Europe, of course, you will need euros instead of American dollars. You can obtain euros at cash points or bureaus in major cities while traveling. Be sure to plan ahead so you have enough money for all your expenses.

Exchange money at the airport upon arrival. Cash bureaus at airports will exchange your U.S. dollars for euros, but keep in mind the airport is the most expensive place to do this because the exchange rate will be less favorable.

Insert your debit card in a cash machine while traveling and withdrawal euros. Make sure your card is Europe-friendly (with a Pulse or Star logo on the back). There will be a conversion fee that will vary from bank to bank. Tell your bank prior to traveling that you will be out of the country. If you only have a credit card, obtain the information you need to get a cash advance, if necessary, just like a debit from your bank account.

Visit a cash bureau in town and exchange your money for euros. Cash bureaus are individual businesses in town centers or at post offices. Take your U.S. dollars there and exchange as much as you need. You will pay a fee to exchange your money, but it is cheaper than at an airport.
