James River (Virginia): Map Location, Course & Key Features

The James River is Virginia's largest river—340 mi (550 km) from Allegheny Mountains to Chesapeake Bay. It bisects the state physically, historically, and economically.

How to Find It on a Map

1. Open a mid-Atlantic / Virginia map (Google, USGS topo, Delorme).
2. Locate Chesapeake Bay (large estuary, VA/MD).
3. Trace the westernmost major tributary entering the Bay near Newport News / Norfolk – that's the James.
4. Follow it NW: passes Richmond (fall line), Lynchburg, enters mountains near Clifton Forge.

Major Tributaries

• Appomattox (joins at Hopewell – Civil War surrender site).
• Chickahominy (swampy, Chickahominy Wildlife Mgmt Area).
• Rivanna (Charlottesville area).
• Jackson / Cowpasture (headwaters).

Historical & Economic Weight

• First English settlement: Jamestown (1607) on James.
• Kanawha Canal (1851) linked to Ohio Valley – failed commercially, towpath now trail.
• Modern: Deepwater port (Newport News), coal export, shipbuilding (Newport News Shipbuilding), oyster reefs restoration.

Recreation

James River Park System (Richmond) – urban whitewater, hiking, fishing. Captain John Smith Chesapeake NHT follows lower river.
