How to Pack a Suitcase for a Month's Stay

There is an art to packing your suitcase with just the right amount of clothing in just the right way. Planning for a month's vacation takes preparation and forethought. Before packing, consider what you will be doing while away and whether or not you will need business, dress or casual clothing. Most people pack more than they need so unless you have an enormous suitcase, be practical and mindful.

Instructions

    • 1

Check the weather forecast for your destination and pack accordingly.

    • 2

Start preparing a checklist several weeks in advance. Each time you think of something you will need, write it down.

    • 3

Consider social engagements or adventures that you have planned. You might need a strappy pair of sandals and a little black dress for dining out, or backpacking boots, cargo shorts and a hat for hiking.

    • 4

Coordinate your wardrobe by using neutral colors. That way you can mix and match tops and bottoms. Don't forget a sweater or light jacket for cooler evenings.

    • 5

Inquire whether you will have access to a washer and dryer during your stay. If you do, plan to wash your clothes half way through your vacation. If you won't, purchase travel-size boxes of detergent to wash essential items in the bathroom sink.

    • 6

Pack your toiletries separately in small leakproof bags. If you plan to take makeup, face cleanser and moisturizers, pack them in advance. Continue your daily routine for a few days prior to departure using those items you've packed, so you are sure you have everything you will need with you.

    • 7

Tightly roll T-shirts, shorts, skirts or jeans. This allows you to pack more items in your suitcase and prevents wrinkles.

    • 8

Reduce luggage space by purchasing travel vacuum bags. Pack rolled or folded items and remove the air by following instructions on the bags.

    • 9

Limit the number of shoes. Depending on your destination, one pair of athletic shoes, one black dress shoe or sandal, and one pair of casual sandals or flip-flops should suffice. Pack underwear and socks inside shoes or boots.

    • 10

Omit a hair dryer, unless there won't be one where you are staying.

    • 11

Don't add extra weight by packing too many books. Limit yourself to just one. You can download e-books to your smart phone or laptop. If you are not traveling with those devices, plan on trading books with another traveler or visiting a second-hand bookstore.
