Make a list. Before packing the suitcases, make a list of everything you will need for your vacation. Start by listing items you have to have, such as toiletries, undergarments, prescriptions, cell phone chargers and glasses or contacts. Then make a list of things you would like to bring, including cameras, books, journals and toys. Keep this list handy when packing the suitcases.
Bring enough clothing. When making your list of items to pack, make a list of things you will be doing on your vacation. This will help you determine what types of clothing to bring. Plan to pack at least 2 changes of clothing a day, such as daytime outfits and evening attire. If you plan to cook at the cottage rather than go out to eat, still plan on the extra clothing because the daytime outfits might get dirty if you are out all day. Pack at least 2 swimsuits so while you are wearing one, the other one can be drying for the next day.
Bring comfortable shoes. You might be walking around a lot, so bring comfortable shoes, such as gym shoes or sandals. To save room in your suitcases, try packing shoes that will go with multiple outfits.
Pack separate suitcases. Pack a suitcase for each person going on your cottage vacation. This will keep everyone's clothing and toiletries in one area, reducing the need to search through each and every piece of luggage. When packing suitcases make sure to put anything that can leak in a zip-locking back to prevent it from getting on clothing if the bottle breaks.
Separate travel-related materials. Keep any travel items in a separate carry-on bag or one that you do not put in the trunk. Items to keep with you while traveling include confirmation numbers, plane tickets, travel insurance documents, photo IDs, passports, forms of payment, travel guides, maps and itineraries. You might also want to keep a folder with a notebook in it to journal your trip and keep receipts in one location.
