What You Need in a Camper Van

When packing a camper van, there may not be space for anything but essentials. Campers must prioritize what to pack and what to leave behind depending on the nature and duration of their trip.
  1. Cooking Items

    • Pack items for both indoor -- in the case of inclement weather -- and outdoor cooking. Include a grill or campfire stove, pots and pans, firewood, starter and a lighter to cook your meals. Plates, utensils, cups or glasses, napkins and condiments make it easier to eat around the campfire. Bring a cooler and ice to keep meats and beverages cool. Pack more food than necessary in case of emergency.

    Cleaning and General Items

    • Trash bags, cleaning supplies, towels, soap and shampoo, tissues, toilet paper and sanitary items help keep the facilities and campers clean. Don't forget extra batteries, scissors or a knife, duct tape and a map or GPS system. Bug spray and sunscreen are essential for sunny weather, but always be prepared for rain with ponchos and umbrellas. Plenty of changes of clothes will keep campers dry and clean.

    Medical Emergency Items

    • Medical supplies should be easily accessible in a camper van. This includes Band-Aids, gauze pads, disinfectant, alcohol wipes, over-the-counter medication and antibacterial gel, as well as more advanced medical items such as burn dressings, eye patches, ice packs, pocket breathing masks, Epipens, aloe and ear drops. Bring a list of phone numbers for local medical facilities.

    Activity Items

    • If the campsite is near water, pack life jackets, inner tubes and a pump, and fishing gear. For fun on land, bring a Frisbee, kite or a baseball and gloves. Include a lantern, flashlight, folding chairs and scented candles for nighttime fun.
