How to Carry Rx Meds in Your Baggage

The Transportation Security Administration regulates the procedures for carrying prescription medications in your baggage onto an airplane. All prescription medication, including liquids and gels, are permitted on the plane, as well as syringes that are prescribed. These items must be declared and screened before you will be permitted to leave the security checkpoint. It is recommended that you have these items easily accessible, so that you are able to move quickly and easily through security.

Pack all prescription medication in your carry-on bags. It is recommended that you have all medication in its original prescription bottle that you received from the pharmacy and that the name on the bottle matches the name on the boarding pass. This can help to speed up screening at the security checkpoint.

Carry documentation that supports the medication, such as a copy of the written prescription or a physician's letter stating the medication and purpose. This isn't a requirement but can help to clarify any questions as you move through security.

    • 3

Do not place liquid medications that exceed the 3.4 oz. limit, should not be in a clear bag with other liquids as required with the 3-1-1 rule. These must be shown to a TSA security agent at the security checkpoint and will be screened separate from your other baggage in the X-ray machine.
