How to Make Your Amtrak Trip Easier

Amtrak trains cover long distance routes across the U.S. Traveling by train can be a relaxing alternative to plane or car, offering views of America as you travel, as well as helping you skip the lines and security checks at airports. Train stations are often in centers of cities as well meaning that you arrive at the heart of your destination rather than at an airport miles out of town.

Instructions

    • 1

Plan your journey online using Amtrak's interactive route atlas. Use the website to try and get a good deal on your ticket. It is usually best to make early reservations to get the cheapest fares. Traveling outside of peak travel periods and holidays often provides lower fares and quieter, more comfortable journeys. Consider buying a rail pass if you are planning a number of journeys in a short period of time.

    • 2

Make a pre-departure checklist of things to remember before leaving for the station. The list should include your tickets, identification, baggage and travel insurance. Make sure you have any medication and items for special dietary requirements packed in your carry-on luggage.

    • 3

Take items for entertainment if you are taking a long journey. Books, magazines, cards and MP3 players are all useful for passing the time on a lengthy trip. Wi-Fi is available on some routes.

    • 4

Use the on-board dining facilities so you can relax and enjoy a meal. Many long distance trains have dining cars providing hot meals. Remember to make a reservation with a member of staff on the train. Other trains will have lounges to sit and have foods such as soups and salads, while shorter routes usually offer a snack bar.

    • 5

Book sleeper accommodation on a long-distance route. Roomettes for two adults or bedroom suites to accommodate families are available. Suites and some of the rooms have an in-room washroom and shower. Meals are included in your ticket price if you book onto a sleeper service.

Check the baggage allowances for your journey. Checked baggage needs to be on board 30 minutes before your departure, while carry-on baggage is limited to two bags per person.
