What Can You Take on a Domestic Flight?

More than 620 million people took domestic flights in the U.S. in 2010, traveling with 101 airlines. The regulations governing what you can and cannot carry onto your flight can be confusing even to seasoned travelers. Domestic flight regulations are issued by the Transportation Security Administration -- check their prohibited items list for any recent updates and always check with your airline for any additional regulations.
  1. Liquids

    • The regulations governing liquids are probably the most high profile amongst travelers. You can take liquids on your flight provided you pack them in a specific way, summarized by the Transportation Security Administration's 3-1-1 rule. All liquids and gels taken into the cabin must be in containers of three ounces or less and fit into one quart-sized clear plastic bag. Each traveler can put one of these bags through the security scanner. You can carry larger containers of liquid in your checked baggage, but if you attempt to carry them onto the plane with you they will be confiscated.

    Electronic Devices

    • You can carry small electronic devices such as mp3 players onto the plane with you, but if your device runs off lithium batteries, be aware that these are subject to regulations. You cannot pack spare lithium batteries in your checked luggage, and any you pack in your carry-on luggage must be secured, either in the original packaging or using electrical or adhesive tape. You could also pack each battery in a separate plastic bag. Pack any electronic devices carefully to ensure they cannot be accidentally switched on during the flight.

    Food and Beverages

    • You can bring food onto the plane with you if you observe the regulations, although beverages fall under the regulations governing liquids. You must put all food through the scanning machine at the security check. Ensure the food is properly wrapped or in a container. You can put unpeeled natural items like fruit through the machine unwrapped, but half-eaten fruit must be wrapped. Bring any beverages in bottle of three ounces or less, using the 3-1-1 rule. The only exceptions are baby formula, bottled breast milk or medicines, which can be brought through in unlimited quantities but you must declare them at the security check and present them for inspection. Once you have passed through the security check, you are free to buy beverages in the airport and carry them onto the plane when you board.

    Disability Items

    • If you suffer from a disability, you can bring certain items onto the plane, although mobility equipment such as crutches must be scanned by security staff. You can bring over-the-counter and prescription medication in liquid, gel or aerosol form with you. Water, juice or liquid nutrition for disabled passengers or those with a medical condition are also permitted, although if these are in containers larger than three ounces, you must declare them to security staff. When passing through security, you must keep all disability-related items separate from the rest of your luggage.
