Peru Pet Travel Requirements

Traveling with your pet can be rewarding and less stressful than leaving your pet in the care of a kennel or family member. When traveling to Peru, specific requirements must be met before your pet is allowed into the country.
  1. Veterinarian Clearance

    • Dogs and cats entering Peru must have a United States Interstate and International Certificate of Health examination for Small Animals issued by a veterinarian. This must include the animal's full identification and medical history. The document must say that the pet is up to date on shots and is free of carre disease, distemper, parvovirus, rabbis, leptospirosis, parainfluenza, panleukopenia feline, rinotraqueitis, calicivirus and leukemia feline.

    USDA Clearance

    • Pets leaving the United States to go to Peru must also have clearance from the United States Department of Agriculture Animal and Plant Inspection Services. The USDA will also check to see that your pet is up to date on shots and is free of carre disease, distemper, parvovirus, rabbis, leptospirosis, parainfluenza, panleukopenia feline, rinotraqueitis, calicivirus and leukemia feline. Once this is determined, your pet will be given a stamp of approval. These documents plus $107 (as of 2010) must be given at customs.

    Airlines

    • Every airline has different rules regarding the travel of dogs and cats on airplanes. On LAN Airlines, one of the most popular airlines in Peru, dogs and cats (regardless of size) must ride in the cargo area in a pet carrier. The animals cannot board if it is below 45 degrees Fahrenheit or over 84 degrees. Delta Airlines allows pets only as cargo and has specific temperature restrictions based on breeds. You must also complete a live animal checklist.
