Understand space restrictions. If you are flying to your new country, check luggage restrictions for checked and carry-on baggage. New airline requirements specify weight and size, and airlines are increasingly particular about adherence to these rules. When you have a clear idea of the space you have for packing, you will be able to choose items and determine additional items for shipping, if necessary.
Consider the climate. If you are heading to Panama for a year, it is unlikely that you will need a heavy winter jacket, but you will certainly need a quality rain shell and beach apparel. When you are packing for a year abroad, think about the seasons and climate of your host country and pack items that will be suitable for the climate. If you will be traveling to a place that has a long warm season and a short cold season, consider buying warmer items in country or having them shipped from home. That way, you can fill your checked baggage with items that will be useful for the longest period of time.
Pack culturally appropriate items. In most Western countries, anything goes as far as clothing is concerned. If you are heading to a developing country, however, pack clothing that is appropriate and respectful for the culture you will be visiting.
Consider vacation time. When packing for a year abroad, remember to pack items for vacations. It might be difficult to find a bathing suit for a trip to Guam in December when you are living in the interior of Russia, for example. Keep vacation items to a minimum, however, since they will be used during a relatively small portion of your time.
Resist the urge to over-pack. Although it can be tempting to pack everything you own for a year abroad, keep in mind that you can purchase most items in your host country. Even in deepest Africa, the nearest large city is only a day or two away, and you will be able to buy necessities. Also consider that you will want to buy items to blend into the culture of your new country.
