Research the destination. Find out what weather to expect and the range of possible temperatures. Begin a packing list one week before departure. Review and adjust it daily.
Make a list of all the activities planned for the vacation. Include outings and day trips, athletic activities like skiing or swimming and events, like special dinners or meetings.
Create a page for each activity. List special clothing and equipment that's required. Be sure to include details like underwear, socks or hosiery and footwear.
Visualize each day from morning to bedtime. Make a note of everything needed for each day. Include toiletries, cosmetics, medications, grooming equipment like a razor or hair dryer.
Take along nail polish for repairs, tweezers, scissors, insect repellent, extra contact lenses and eyeglasses. Remember to include prescription sunglasses. Pack a small sewing kit and a resealable bag with a few adhesive bandages and antibiotic ointment.
Organize on paper a wardrobe for each day. Itemize everything, including underwear and sleepwear. Be specific about items of apparel: short black skirt, linen blazer, white sleeveless tee.
Review each day's wardrobe needs and start to consolidate. Arrange for clothing items to do double and triple duty to reduce packing. Take along neutral, versatile items that coordinate well with one another.
