How to Keep Wrinkles Away When Packing

Packing a suitcase is an art and a science. You want to be prepared for the unexpected, like a sudden change in the weather or an unplanned evening at the fanciest restaurant in town. At the same time, you don’t want to lug around a bunch of clothes you won’t wear. To have a perfectly packed suitcase, consider the possible things you will be doing, and plan your clothing accordingly. Then get the proper supplies – lots of plastic garment bags and baggies – and take the time to carefully fold your clothes before you pack them. With a little preparation and the right materials, you can arrive at your destination with wrinkle-free clothes for every occasion.

Lay all the clothes you are going to pack and your suitcase on a flat surface. Your bed works fine.

    • 2

Put your shoes in protective bags (plastic bags also work) and place them on the bottom of your suitcase.

    • 3

Put your underwear and socks in plastic baggies, then lay them on top of your shoes. This will make a level surface for the rest of your clothes.

    • 4

Fold your jeans in half or thirds and put them on top of your underwear and socks.

    • 5

Fold your heavier clothes such as sweaters and place them on top of your jeans, then fold your light-weight sweaters and T-shirts and place them on top of your heavy sweaters. You can place your sweaters and T-shirts in individual plastic bags before you pack them. Also, you can roll your sweaters and T-shirts instead of folding them. If you choose to do that, simply fold the sweater or T-shirt in half, then lightly roll it from the top to the bottom.

    • 6

Keep your shirts on their hangers and put them in individual plastic garment bags. Take four or five shirts and place them in your suitcase. The hanger tops should be at the top of the suitcase. Fold all of the shirts in half once, so the shirt bottoms are touching the collar of the top shirt. Tuck the plastic bags around the shirts.

    • 7

Place your pants and/or skirts in individual plastic bags. Fold them in half or thirds and place them on top of your shirts.

    • 8

Place your blazers in individual plastic bags. Fold each one in half lengthwise, so the buttons are on the outside. Fold the sleeves to one side of the blazer. Then fold the blazer in half, so the collar and the bottom of the blazer are touching. Place it on top of your pants.

Tuck in the plastic around your clothes. Make sure there are not any holes in your suitcase. If so, fill them in with items such as rolled socks and underwear or an extra washcloth.
