What Does a US Citizen Need to Enter Canada?

The Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative (WHTI) requires U. S. citizens to carry specific travel documents when entering Canada, Mexico, Bermuda and the Caribbean. The WHTI was established to enable the U. S. Department of Homeland Security to identify travelers reliably and quickly.
  1. Requirements to Enter Canada

    • An adult U. S. citizen who wishes to enter Canada should obtain a passport from the U. S. Department of State. A passport, passport card, NEXUS card (issued to prescreened travelers to Canada), U. S. military ID, merchant mariner card or transportation letter also provide valid identification. Otherwise, the traveler needs a government-issued photo ID (such as a driver's license or state ID) and a certified copy of a birth or naturalization certificate.

    Traveling with Children

    • Adults must document their right to travel with minors who either aren't their children or aren't their custodial responsibility. This documentation should consist of proof of custody or a notarized affidavit from the parent or legal guardian. Citizenship documentation also is required for children.

    Travelers Under Age 18

    • A young traveler who enters Canada by himself should obtain a letter attesting that his parents or guardians approve of his travel plans. This documentation is in addition to regular travel documents.
