UK Passport Photo Requirements

Passports have been around for hundreds of years, originating as pieces of paper used to establish travel rights through different kingdoms. For any type of international travel in modern times, you are required to have a passport that verifies who you are. While the process has become computerized, passports these days have microchips and built in safety features. One of those safety features is quite simple: a photograph identifying the owner of the passport. The UK has very specific requirements for these photos.
  1. Types

    • Get two color photos taken within the last month. Black and white photos are not allowed.

    Size

    • Photos must be 45 mm by 35 mm in size.

    Effects

    • The face must be clear, easily visible and against a light gray or cream background, without red-eye or shadows, and not have any folds or creases.

    Considerations

    • Remove sunglasses and eyeglasses if possible. Show your full face and look clearly at the camera.

    Countersigning

    • One of the two photos must be countersigned by a business professional who has known you for at least two years to vouch for your identity. Leave one photo unsigned.

    Children

    • Photo rules for kids are less stringent, with children allowed to have more relaxed expressions. Parents can support young children with a hand, but it cannot be seen in the photo.
