India has its own passport requirements, but its requirements for passport photos are generally the same as in other countries. In order to apply for an Indian passport, the applicant must submit a recent, accurate photo of himself along with his passport application.
Photos for Indian passports must depict the applicant from the front view. The applicant's face must be viewed directly face-on and not from any other angle. The applicant's face must be clear and not concealed by dark or colored glasses or any other accoutrement.
The photo frame must include the applicant's face and may extend to the applicant's shoulders, as long as the face accounts for 70 percent to 80 percent of the passport photo. However, the photo should not include any other part of the torso or the lower half of the subject's body.
Photos must be against a clean, white background. Colorful or patterned backgrounds are not permitted. In addition, the photo must be clear and crisp, with no blurriness. Black and white photos or photos taken from a Polaroid or an ordinary camera are not permitted.
The actual photo must be 3 1/2-by-3 1/2 cm.
The applicant must submit two identical passport photos as part of the application. These photos should not be older than six months.
