Canadian Visa Photo Requirements

To obtain a travel visa to Canada, you will need to include photos of yourself with your application. The photos must adhere to the guidelines laid out by the Canadian High Commission (CHC) or they will not be accepted. It is not necessary to have the photos taken professionally, although a professional photographer will likely have experience producing this type of photo.
  1. General Information

    • Two identical copies of the same photo are required, either black and white or in color, with a light or white background. They must have been taken within the last six months and must include a clear frontal view of the full face, the head and the top of the shoulders. Digital photos are acceptable as long as they have not been altered in any way.

    Size Requirements

    • Photos must measure 1 3/4 inches (45 mm) high by 1 3/8 inches (35 mm) wide. The head, from chin to crown (the top of the head), must measure between 1 1/4 inches (31 mm) and 1 7/16 inches (36 mm). The face must be in the center of the photo.

    Facial Requirements

    • The facial expression must be neutral (no frowning or smiling) and the mouth must be closed. Prescription glasses are permitted as long as the frames and lenses do not obscure the eyes in any way. Tinted prescription lenses are permitted, but sunglasses of any kind are not.

    Head Coverings

    • Hairpieces and other cosmetic accessories are permitted, but only if they do not disguise or obscure a person's normal appearance. Headscarves and other religious coverings are permitted, but they must not obscure any part of the face.
