Access and print the passport application online at the U.S. Department of State Web site. Complete the application form.
Visit your local post office at least six weeks prior to your departure date. February through April are busier times of year and may require additional processing time of several weeks.
Have your photograph taken at the post office or bring two acceptable photos with you.
Provide the necessary documentation including completed application form, proof of U.S. citizenship and a valid form of photo identification.
Select a delivery method for shipping the application and receiving your passport. The post office recommends Express Mail for fastest delivery.
Pay the passport application fee, execution fee and shipping fee. The application fee is paid separately to the U.S. Department of State.
