Vista Command Mode List

Windows Vista utilizes dozens of commands. To use a command, open the command prompt by clicking "Start" then "All Programs" then "Accessories." Press "Command Prompt." Type the command into the box. You can find a list of these commands on your computer by typing "help" into the commands prompt.
  1. Files

    • Write "assoc" to display file extension associations. Type "attrib" to display file attributes. Type "del" or "erase" to delete files. Write "dir" to display a list of files in a directory. Input "expand" to expand compressed files. Write "fc" to display the differences between two files. Type "find" to search for text in files. Type "findstr" to search to a specific string within all the files of your computer. Input "print" to print a text file. Write "ren" or "rename" to rename a file. Input "type" to display a text file.

    Properties

    • Input "*bcdedit" to set the properties within the boot database. Write "date" to set the date. Type "diskpart" to configure disk partition properties. Press "time" to set the system time.

    Directories

    • Type "cd" or "chdir" to display the name of the current directory. Input "md" or "mkdir" to create a directory. Type "rd" to remove a directory.

    Applications

    • Input "cls" to clear the screen of all files and applications. Write "taskkill" to kill an application.
