How to Decorate a Beach Bag

When going to a beach, there are often many items you want to carry with you: sunscreen to protect you from the hot summer sun, a towel to sit on, a change of clothing to wear between the beach and your house. And what better way to carry all of your beach essentials than in a bag you've designed yourself? Here are some simple ways you can transform a blah bag into a beach-inspired treasure.

Instructions

Cut out the letters of your name in felt. Carefully sew or glue the letters to the front of the bag where it opens. Use a bright color that contrasts with the color of the bag.

    • 2

Use a small pair of scissors to cut out beach-inspired shapes, such as sharks, shells, rocks and little pairs of flip-flops, from fabric in different beach-inspired colors, such as blue and green. Lay the bag out flat in front of you, and sew or glue the cutouts on that side of the bag. Wait a day, and do the same to the other side of the bag.

    • 3

Use a fabric hole punch to put small holes around the side of the bag in an even pattern. Add grommets or glue to keep the edges of the holes from fraying. Weave a cord resembling rope used on sailboats in and out of the holes. Make a knot at one end to finish the design. Add a bit of glue to keep the rope ends from fraying.

Gather shells from the beach that are similar in size and color. White shells look good against dark colors. Place the shells in a pot of boiling water for a minute or two to get rid of any remaining debris. Place a droplet of glue on the shells, and press them firmly onto the bottom of the beach bag.

Cut up a terrycloth beach towel with colors that complement your bag into even strips. Sew the ends and sides of the towel strips so there are no frayed edges. Make a long braid from the strips. Place a line of glue on the braid and wrap it around the middle of the bag, tying the ends of the braid together to form a bow.
