Have at least one wheeled bag in your luggage ensemble. Using the wheeled bag as a cart, you can handle your other luggage easily. It is better to choose rubberized wheels that rotate 360 degrees, for easier handling and movement control. Also, choose a recessed wheel mechanism because it helps protect wheels from damage during loading and unloading.
Choose bags with long retractable grip handles. Handles that are too short may cause you to lean sideways while walking. The retract feature protects the handle from damage. If you are buying a large bag, go for one that has two handles. This makes it easier for you to lift and hoist it onto an overhead compartment.
Get semisoftsided bags. You get the benefits of expandability, good protection and lightness of weight with these bags. Go for nylon or ballistic nylon rather than polyester material because the former is stronger than polyester. Check if the bag mentions something called "denier," which basically means the thickness of the material fiber. If it does, then opt for higher denier.
Look for luggage that comes with modern, coil-made synthetic zippers rather than heavy metal ones. When you overstuff your suitcase and try to zip it, the zipper takes the strain of holding on while you try to force close it. In such cases, synthetic zippers can self-repair when moved over the teeth, thus preventing breakage of the zipper.
