How to Become a Brazilian Citizen

There's no denying it--Brazil is a country on the rise. Colonized by Portuguese explorers in the 16th century, it has since developed into the fifth largest country in the world. Brazil is home to miles and miles of stunning beaches and a vast biodiversity. With its thriving economy, it's no wonder that Brazil is one of the fastest growing countries in Latin America. Completing the naturalization process is an endeavor that will ultimately prove well worth the time.

  Establish yourself as a permanent resident in Brazil for at least four years before submitting an application. Declaring long-term residency is required of foreigners attempting to gain Brazilian citizenship.

  Exhibit an ability to read and write Portuguese at a satisfactory level. Portuguese is the official language of Brazil.

  Demonstrate an ability to financially support dependents in Brazil. This requirement is automatically met if the applicant is married to a Brazilian citizen or is a student of up to 25 years old.

  Lack a criminal record in Brazil for a crime punishable by more than a one year prison sentence. Demonstrate a financial record in Brazil free of tax debts.
