Can You Get a Passport Renewed the Same Day From the US Customs Office?

The Department of State is the agency that handles passport renewals in the United States, with passport processing centers located throughout the country. U.S. Customs and Border Protection does not renew passports; they merely check them for verification purposes at borders. It's possible to obtain same day renewals from certain passport agencies approved by the Department of State if an appointment can be made.
  1. Expedited Passports

    • To renew your passport quickly, use one of the passport agencies approved by the U.S. Department of State. Some of these agencies, such as Travisa in Washington, D.C., offer same day or next day processing if you can secure an appointment with them and produce a clean, undamaged passport issued under your current name in the last fifteen years, along with two passport photos and proof of departure date. For life or death emergencies, the National Passport Information Center should be contacted.

    Renewing By Mail

    • Renewing by mail to either the U.S. Department of State or a passport agency will take longer than one day due to mailing times. Processing of a renewal by mail with the Department of State takes at least two weeks.

    Charges

    • A rush processing fee is assessed in addition to the regular U.S. government passport renewal fee of $170. Travisa charges a rush fee of $199, as of 2010.
