Things to Do in Huntington, New York

The Town of Huntington is a nature lover's oasis in the midst of busy and congested Long Island. The area is also rich in history from the earliest days of recorded American history. Matinecock Indians inhabited the area before Europeans arrived and bartered for land, and the British occupied Long Island during the American Revolution. The sleepy region awoke after World War II, becoming popular with new homeowners and their families.
  1. Huntington Militia Arsenal

    • A local patriot hid gunpowder in his attic before the British occupation of Long Island during the American Revolution. Visit his home, which later became known as the Arsenal. See the village green, adjacent to the Arsenal, which was headquarters for the British on Long Island. The current militia holds drills and encampments on the green. Celebrate Muster Day in May or Huntington Independence Day in July at the Arsenal.

    Huntington Parks and Trails

    • Skateboarders will find challenges at the Huntington Skate Park.

      Huntington is home to numerous parks and trails in natural settings. Visit Crab Meadow Beach to swim, stroll on the boardwalk or walk the trail within view of the tidal channel and wetlands. Go to Dix Hills Park to traverse the fitness trail with 20 exercise stations.The trail at Henry Ingraham Nature Preserve winds through oak, hickory and walnut woods as it passes a pre-revolutionary era cemetery. View the extensive trail system on the town website. Skateboarders will want to try the city skate park, an intricate configuration of grind boxes, rails, quarter- and half-pipes designed to challenge the most talented skaters.

    Walt Whitman Birthplace State Historic Site

    • Visit the birthplace of one of America's foremost poets. Born in West Hills in 1819, Whitman founded the Huntington newspaper, The Long-Islander, which is still published. Hike the 8.2-mile Walt Whitman National Recreation Trail that rises to the highest point on Long Island. Start at the birthplace as you prowl the same ground that Whitman did. Dogs, horses, and hikers are all welcome on the trail.

    Caumsett State Historic Park

    • Caumsett, a day-use park, has 1,750 acres for outdoor sports and recreation activities. Hike, bike, jog, and ride horseback on the various nature trails in the large park, and cross-country ski during the winter. You also can obtain a permit for fishing or scuba diving. The park has manicured gardens and natural areas encompassing woodlands, salt marsh and rocky shorelines. Volunteers for Wildlife Hospital and Education Center operates from the park to aid injured Long Island wildlife through hospitalization and rehabilitation.
