All American Airlines passengers 18 and older must have a valid driver's license or a government-issued photo ID in order to board. Exceptions can sometimes be made for individuals with an original copy of their birth certificate and/or social security card. Call American Airlines before your departure date to learn more about exceptions to the identification rules.
Passengers boarding international flights are required to have a valid passport. This includes both adults and minor children. Passports are required to enter all countries, including Canada, Mexico and the Caribbean. Noncitizens entering the U.S. must have the required travel documents as specified by their country of origin.
Some countries require travelers to have a visa, which is separate from a passport in that is an official document permitting stay in a foreign country for a specific period of time, whereas a passport is used for identity verification purposes. Visit the American Airlines website to verify whether or not a travel visa is required for your international flight.
